Something as simple as turning on the tap to get clean fresh water is not so easy in Nigeria. Many parts of Nigeria do not have access to water, with rural dwellers suffering the most. Imagine walking 3-4 miles every morning (including children) to fetch water from the closest river or stream and then carrying 10 gallons of water back home… balancing it on your head! Keep in mind that the water is NOT clean and safe for drinking. This is a major concern for children under five, as water and sanitation related diseases are one of the leading causes of their death. In Nigeria, over 45,000 children under five die annually from diseases caused by poor access to water, sanitation and hygiene, according to WHO data.
